Wiper seals are often used for fluid containment and to prevent dirt, moisture or particles from entering a reciprocating shaft mechanism.

Wiper seals are typically used on hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, as well as transmission shaft, telescopic suspension forks for motorcycles and bicycles. Without a wiper seal, the retracting piston rod could transport contaminants into the Cylinder.
